UGC in preparation to achieve Fit India campaign

Fit India movement is a national movement of India which is to encourage the people of India in remaining healthy and fit by doing physical activities ad sports in their daily life.

Fit India movement is a national movement of India which is to encourage the people of India in remaining healthy and fit by doing physical activities ad sports in their daily life. The movement was launched by honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi at Indira Gandhi Stadium of New Delhi on 29 th August, 2019 on the eve of National Sports Day.
Now the University Grant Commission of India has decided to apply the movement in all institutions and for this they are making their action plan of implementing the movement. Primarily UGC is going to ban junk food in the institutions’ canteens or in institutions’ premises. UGC’s action plan also includes a daily physical activity in all institutions for a period of at least 45 minutes to be implemented for all students and with it, and the fitness activity should be consulted with doctors, nutritionists and health specialists.
In its recent notice University Grant Commission has recommended all the higher institutions to set up a fitness club in every institute in which there have to be at least 20 members among which there have to be at least 4 female members and the fitness club should be formed with students, staffs and other faculty members of that institute.
In a circular UGC told that the fitness clubs of the higher institutes will indulge in organising all sorts of physical activity to keep its students, staffs and other faculty members fit and healthy. For this they can organize sports events in its institute, fitness activities and they should also promote the fitness activity among students and make them do the activity by showing them the benefits of remaining fit and healthy.
The circular also directed the institutes to upload their action plan of fitness and their activities in the institutes’ website. They are also directed to upload this data on monthly basis so that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) can review this and keep its eyes on the effectiveness of the movement. The circular also recommended to set up a dedicated cell in the ministry like Fit India Cell to monitor on the work and progress of this Fit India Campaign in institutes.
Now, the reason of implementation of this campaign at the university level is that there will be evaluation of institutes and rating from 0 to 5 will be given to all institutes and the evaluation and rating of institutions will be on the basis of their fitness activities and the achievements they will make in the campaign. There will be also some additional marks that is to be given to that institute/institutes whose students will get medals in the National Sports Meet which will be organized in all institutes by the Association of Indian Universities. According to the circular in
the grading methods the grade which institutes will get in the Fit India Campaign will add an extra weight-age of 5 percent marks in the National Institutional Ranking Framework.
