Top 4 things to consider before pursuing Engineering in India or Abroad

India is one of the largest suppliers of engineers to the world. Engineering is one of the most prominent educational fields in India. However, there is a considerable difference in completing your engineering bachelors in India and completing your engineering bachelors abroad.

Even though India has produced some of the excellent engineers across the world, statistics show that aspiring engineers tend to opt for the engineering courses that are beyond the geographical boundaries of India.

The New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and a few others began to write about India and India’s engineers in a flattering vein from the late 1990’s on-wards.

Let us look at the key points in which engineering in India is different from engineering in a foreign country:

1.Approach to Thinking Process

Engineering is a complex structure of critical thinking, solving constructive problems along with an innovative approach to problems.

In India, practical knowledge is sidelined since the curriculum of Engineering in colleges focuses only on the theoretical sphere.

Indian colleges have a very traditional approach to the curriculum; the same educational curriculum has been followed through the years. In the countries abroad, the concentrated focus is on the practical knowledge, which helps the student to polish his or her practical and high order thinking skills like synthesis, evaluation and analysis.

2.Limited Seats

Since India’s IITs are to be the only colleges providing top-notch engineering education, there are very limited seats for which students can enrol.

One of the most prominent problems in this is the reservations. Students with calibre may be sidelined due to the process of reservations and may thus, not be able to attend the team of being enrolled in IIT. In contradiction to this, the foreign universities have seat reservations only based on merit and are thoroughly and clearly academic.

3.Rigidity

Once a student opts for a particular major in the branch of engineering, it is almost impossible for him or her to shift his subjects for changes majors in India.

There may be a possibility that every department may not have qualified teachers or specializations in the subject in the subject that they teach. However, in colleges in the US, students are permitted to have multiple electives or majors between which they can shift if the need arises.

4.Internship Programmes

In India, there is no certain or fixed possession of necessary skill sets required by the employers. As a result, a lot of times, the on-campus placement providers feel like the students are not worthy of having a place at their office.

In order to improve employ ability, the government has underlined the need to improve internship programs that demand the necessary skill sets from their candidates.

Contrarily, the foreign programs have a better edge in the competitive field as firstly their focus is on the practical knowledge and the students are well equipped with the knowledge that is required in the actual field of Engineering.

There are exclusive courses that are designed alongside the formal educational curriculum that teaches the students to deal with real-time problems that they may face.

So, there is a need to call in reforms in the educational curriculum of Engineering in India if we are to compete with the courses that are provided around the globe.
