The law profession is one of the world’s most respected and rewarding careers. However, getting into a law school requires one to clear an entrance exam. There are two major entrance exams for law schools in India, the SLAT and the CLAT. In this article, we’ll compare the two exams, highlight their differences and similarities, and provide valuable insights to help you make an informed decision.
SLAT and CLAT are two major entrance exams for law schools in India.
SLAT stands for Symbiosis Law Admission Test, a national-level entrance exam conducted by Symbiosis International University. The Symbiosis law entrance exam is specifically designed for students who wish to pursue undergraduate law courses.
On the other hand, CLAT stands for the Common Law Admission Test, a national-level entrance exam conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. It is designed for students who wish to pursue both undergraduate and postgraduate law courses.
The SLAT exam is usually conducted in the first week of May every year, and the registration process begins in the last week of January. Registration for SLAT 2023 is now open on the official website of Symbiosis International University (SIU). The exam authority began accepting SLAT Application Forms on December 16, 2022.
Candidates interested in joining SIU and its affiliated colleges must complete SLAT Registration on or before April 12, 2023. To complete the Symbiosis law admission process, candidates must fill out the SLAT Application Form by creating an official SLAT 2023 account.
On the other hand, the CLAT exam is usually conducted in the second week of May every year, and the registration process begins in the first week of January.
Regarding application fees, there is a notable difference between SLAT and CLAT.
For SLAT, the registration fee is 1950/- for all category candidates, and this amount is non-refundable. In addition, candidates must pay a program registration fee for every program, which is INR 1000/- (also non-refundable and non-transferable).
On the other hand, the CLAT registration fee varies based on the candidate’s category. For example, it is 4000/-for general category candidates, while for reserved category candidates, it is 3500/-.
When it comes to choosing between CLAT and SLAT, one of the first things that candidates consider is which one is tougher to crack. Regarding the number of applicants per seat, CLAT is generally considered more challenging than SLAT.
For instance, in CLAT, approximately 17 candidates compete for just one seat, while in SLAT, around 130 candidates compete for one seat at Symbiosis International University.
Regarding the difficulty level of questions, CLAT tends to ask tougher questions in Legal Aptitude, which is based on core law topics. However, CLAT has been modified to include more comprehensive types of questions, which may make it easier for candidates to navigate.
Both SLAT and CLAT exams are highly competitive and require a lot of hard work and dedication to crack. Ultimately, the choice between the two exams depends on your preference and the law schools to which you wish to apply to.
