No more new engineering college from 2020

Notice was published by AICTE about a year ago in which AICTE told that no permit will be given for new engineering college from 2020 and instead the existing college can apply to extend seats but new engineering college will not be permitted to be established. And this new notice is going to be applied from this academic year.

The suggestion for no new engineering college was given by a government committee headed by the chairman of IIT Hyderabad, BVR Mohan Reddy. The committee conducted a study on India’s engineering education and found that among the 15.5 lakh seats for B.E or B.Tech in 3921 engineering colleges nearly 51 per cent seats were empty. Moreover, nearly 1.67 lakhs seats were dropped by B.Tech and M.Tech colleges across India which is highest in the past five years.

With the decision of no new engineering college, the committee also presented before AICTE few more suggestions.

  • The committee suggested to not to grant the application to extend seats of traditional engineering branches like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering etc. as the demand for these branches has fallen over the past few years.
  • The committee suggested AICTE take action so that the engineering colleges can be encouraged to convert their traditional disciplines into new technology.
  • The committee suggested AICTE introduce new engineering programs instead of that traditional one like Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Block chain, 3D Printing, Data Science, Cyber security, Ethical Hacking etc.
  • The committee also suggested AICTE to approve new seats in colleges only based on their capacity and infrastructure as by the investigation of the committee it was found that many colleges had gaps in regulation and there were complaints of corruption against many colleges and with that many colleges do not have quality of teaching for students and with that, they do not have quality of infrastructure and labs, which led to low employability or unemployability of
    engineering graduates.

This is a great decision by AICTE as it will reserve the quality of engineering education and it can be assumed that the number of jobless engineering graduates will be reduced in future and with it, the quality of teaching will be improved as there will be more practical exposure.

AICTE also told in its news that the creation of new capacity in engineering colleges will be reviewed every two years to reserve the quality of teaching. It is also assumed that because of this strict decision the quality of engineering education will be improved as the institutes will go for practical based training rather than theoretical teaching as directed by AICTE. And because of the quality of learning, there will be a skilled workforce who will be able to secure his/her career and by this decision rate of unemployability will reduce.
